  • From the Owners:

”We're Rachel + Jiyoon Han, the Mother Daughter Q Grader Duo™ behind every coffee that gets served at Bean & Bean. Since opening the first shop on Rector & Broadway in 2008, we've grown Bean & Bean to four locations, now with a roastery in Queens, New York.

We're both Q Arabica Graders (AKA the sommeliers of coffee) and we source our coffees with great care. When you drink our coffee, you're not just getting quality; you're also making a promise to do better in the world. At first, we started by sourcing only organic and fair trade certified coffee to ensure environmental sustainability and fair compensation for farmers. But through time, we realized there was more we need to be doing than that.

Despite comprising half of the coffee workforce, women earn significantly less than their male counterparts and lack access to training and resources. Since we opened doors in New York City in 2008, Bean & Bean has been working to bridge the gender gap in coffee throughout the value chain. Together with our partners, we strive for women to get their fair share from origin to your cup. “

  • From the Roaster:
Get your cup ready for a full bodied, earthy, and rich flavorful coffee with a tangy finish that will make you roar with excitement. From the natural wonder of the Sumatran rainforest, this coffee embodies the majestic diversity and complexity of its birthplace.

This exemplary coffee is produced by Gayo Mandiri, a group made up of 1000 local producers. The group is directed by Mr. Amin, a 2nd generation coffee producer that has a mission of ensuring greater earnings for the coffee producers through direct trade relationships. Each of the producers operates their own farm, with milling and final preparation done at a central mill in Takengon. The captivating and unique flavor of this coffee is the result of being processed with great attention to detail in the traditional Sumatra wet-hull method an Indonesian staple enjoyed all over the world.

  • TASTING NOTES

  • From the Roaster:
Metric is a collection of people, stories and places all centered around coffee. We source from established partners, pay high premiums and publish transparency reports to offer real full-spectrum equity. The future of coffee depends on it.

We are inspired by doing good and achieving excellence at every corner. Since day one, our philosophy has been twofold: quality coffee and people over profit.

We spend a few months out of the year visiting producers during harvest to witness production, explore farms and connect the pieces to bring home quality coffee that we are proud to serve. Our commitment to people comes from sourcing coffee that is tied to a sustainable income. For producers, this means that after the cost of production, they are able to make a profit and reinvest it in their land, healthcare and family needs. For our staff in Chicago, it means competitive wages, health insurance and paid time off. Anything that involves people and coffee — we breathe, live and own it.

  • From the Roaster:

Operated by Ato Mijane and his sons, the Halo Hartume washing station works with 396 small holders. Together they focus on farming practices such as agroforestry and natural soil amendments, selective harvesting coffee at peak ripeness, and improved milling techniques that come together to create a clean, structured coffee.
